Veteran's Day

That's my father's dog tag.  He retired from the Navy when I was a teenager.  He served his country during a period when the military was still implementing civil rights equality.  He witnessed a lot of chance in the Navy during his career, but I doubt the changes he saw made up for the discrimination he endured prior to the Civil Rights Era.  He never spoke much about those times, but there were things that I observed that I knew weren't right and I know the changes that came did not make up for what I saw.  Instead of resentment, what I inherited from him was a desire to serve.  I learned what he already knew, which was that despite the injustice, the country, as flawed as it may be, deserved to be defended and that defense of the country was the down payment each generation makes on the future.  I wear my father's tag to connect me to him and both of us to the country we swore to defend.

Veteran’s Day

I spent time today talking to an old friend.  We thanked each other for our service (stationed together in the Air Force) then pondered what this next crop of war veterans means for our society.  We contrasted America’s reaction to today’s veterans as opposed to Viet Nam veterans.  ‘Nam veterans got a less than welcoming reception and as those warriors were coming home, guys like my friend and I were going into the service.  In the course of basic training, technical schools and early assignments, we had a chance to interact with them and we are better citizens for the exposure.  In their way, they tolerated and passed a baton to us.  While we missed any hot wars by a few years, we brushed shoulders with men and women who would push on past us in the service and carry the baton to Iraq, Afghanistan and some, to Iraq again.  We thank you, salute your service and call you comrades in arms with pride.

T-51 Days To Go - Veteran’s Day Rant!

2011 – Last 100 Days

T-51 Days To Go

Veteran’s Day
This post will be up on Veteran’s Day.  I’ve noticed an increase in the number of “Veteran’s Specials” offered by various stores and restaurants to “Thank Veterans for Their Service.”  We should thank veterans for their service.  Military service in wartime and in peace represents a sacrifice by a few for the good of the many.  I object to shallow nature of these “specials” and “thank yous.”  Anyone who thinks a free doughnut is adequate compensation for the sacrifice of military service is either naïve or has never served in the military.  I am not an accountant, versant in tax laws, but I would bet any goods and services given as part of such a promotion is probably a tax write-off, so they are not really “giving” anything away.  If you want to really want to say “thank you,” why not take the money you would spend free meals, doughnuts and whatnot and cut a check for the VA or some organization (like the VFW, DAV, NAMI, etc.) that serves vets?  Why not write that check out every month?  I hear a lot of talk about lowering taxes and I’m pretty sick of the growing tax fetish and I say if you look at what the military does for you day in and day out, whatever it is you’re paying them and their families doesn’t come close to covering what it is you get for those taxes.
