Lessons Learned
You NEVER know – One minute running
on autopilot, grumbling because dinner is a salad when you really wanted wings,
and the next minute dialing 911 to report a fire at a neighbor’s house. One moment you are on the phone with the 911
operator, watching smoke billow from the neighbor’s roof and the next thing you
know a neighbor is jumping the fence, climbing on a metal table and hitting the
roof with a fire extinguisher. The smoke
dissipates for a minute then comes back even thicker. When the fire department gets there, you snap
back to reality as they rake down the ceiling and take an axe to the roof. You think, “Hey isn’t that a little overkill?”
Then you see the glowing embers fall into the room. You realize the light you see in that back
room is not from the firefighters’ flashlights, it is from the fire inside the
roof. Everything is still dreamlike
until two firefighters are running through your house from the street to check
your back room with the common wall with your neighbor’s house. The smell of smoke lingers in the house, the
fire trucks outside throw flashing lights on your walls. You come back to reality and spy the salad,
abandoned on the table. You never
know. Let’s be careful out there,
people.
