A
prayer for my worship musician family
I pray for your hearts, keep them full and joyous and
free. I pray every day you reflect on the magnitude of your gifts and get that
shiver when you ponder Psalm 139[i] and remember you are “fearfully
and wonderfully made…” I am praying you face this overwhelming Mindset Of Lack
with that psalm in your heart and step out of the comfort zone. I pray for you to have the vision to see that
mindset when someone tries to trap you in it.
Dig deep into 1 Corinthians 12-14 and get a sense of
what your gifts mean. “The Holy Spirit
is given to each of us in a special way.
That is for the good of all.”[i] “For the good of all…” is an inclusive
phrase. Your gifts have far-reaching
impact. Internalize that and acknowledge
you are there for a reason.
I pray you consider your gifts as complete for what
you need to do right now. As much as we’d
like to think that the latest piece of shiny gear hyped in a glossy mag is “the
one thing to take your playing to another level,” we both know we can do what
we need to do right now with what we have right now.
I pray you speak of your gifts as just that,
gifts. Your subconscious is listening to
everything you say, so be careful. Let
the way you talk about your gifts and all that come out of them in a positive
way to reinforce how you feel about them. (You do feel good about them,
right?) Our self-talk influences not
only how we feel about our gifts, but affects how others feel about them as
well.
I pray you take some time to let loose and enjoy your
gifts. Widen your musical circles, check
out a jam session, start a new group or be part pf another one starting
up. The larger your musical vocabulary,
the more you bring to worship. The more
you bring to worship, the freer you are to worship.
I pray for the musical situations you are in and your
ability to find peace in them. Know that
when you bring what you have, the rest will fall in place. If you see things that need to be done, do them. If you have questions, ask them. If someone needs help, help them. Keep encouraging people. Keep things moving.
I have a fervent prayer you recognize the authority
your gifts give you. Whatever church you
serve, you’ve earned a place at the table in terms of where that church is
going, what it’s doing and how it serves the community. You’re not “just” part the worship ministry,
your gifts, your service and your experiences are ample qualifications to be
part of the leadership of that church.
Leadership begins with the life you lead off the platform. This is about transforming the world you live
in.
